Experiences from Spera in Deo, EDYD 2009 (5 Sept 2009)

East District youths celebrate Hope in God by celebrating the Mass at their 1-day East District Youth Day event

5 September 2009 - Over 700 East District youths met on 5 September 2009 to celebrate the East District Youth Day 2009, titled "Spera in Deo" ”or "Hope in God" in Latin.

Significantly, this is the first time the East District Youth committees had worked together on an event of this scale, in recent years.

Casually referred to as EDYD, the East District Youth Day is part of the Catholic Archdiocesan Youth Centre's (CAYC) first-ever District Youth Day initiative which decentralised the Archdiocese Youth Day into various districts of the North, City, East, Serangoon and West.

At the east, participants and helpers came from all 5 East District Parishes of Holy Family, Holy Trinity, Our Lady of Perpetual Succour, St. Stephen and Our Lady of Queen of Peace.

Following the footsteps of the previous Archdiocese Youth Days, Confirmation 3 youths were invited exclusively to attend the event.

It took 9 months to conceptualise and execute the entire programme. The youth committees from each eastside parish agreed that they needed to retrace their Catholic roots by focusing on the Eucharist. In order to develop a deeper trust and hope in God, our young people need first to recognise the Living Christ being present in the Eucharist.

As a result, "Spera In Deo" or "Hope in God" was birthed, where the confirmants, catechists, as well as youth ministry helpers and parent-volunteers were mobilised in this 1-day programme to celebrate especially the theme of, "We have set our hope on the living God" (1 Timothy 4:10).

This theme is based after the Holy Father's Message to young people for the Twenty-fourth World Youth Day, which was celebrated on 5 April, Palm Sunday, this year.

The programme was two-fold. Each parish first hosted an afternoon session on the theme of Hope in God, reflecting on minimising our distractions and exhortations to train oneself in Godliness. There was also the Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament.

Following the parish segment, each church proceeded to gather at the CHIJ Katong Primary school hall for a combined night rally. With local actor-host, Randall Tan as the event emcee, there were songs of praise and worship, a testimony by OLPS parishioner and altar server James Chan, and a talk by Fr. John Joseph Fenelon (Fr. JJ) on the Eucharist.

"I was personally moved by the sharing of James Chan. His desire for the Eucharist has further encouraged and motivated me to desire and receive the Eucharist as often as possible. Thanks for the enriching experience. I went home and shared the testimony again with both my sons who are altar servers." Edwyn deSouza, Youth Coordinator, CAYC

Finally, the Holy Mass itself was the highlight of the night. With music provided by Holy Family's 25-year-old choir, Genesis II, the Mass was celebrated by Archbishop Nicholas Chia, together with all the East District Priests.

The decision to make the Mass the main highlight of the EDYD was a challenging one as it also highlighted the fact that our youths are in need for a greater understanding of the Mass. At one point of the night, our bishop Nicholas Chia was compelled to comment on the need for proper attitude, silence and reverence during Mass. He then encouraged all present to actively participate in the Mass so as to exercise and develop our faith further.

Overall, the East District Youth Day brought together youth helpers and parent-volunteers from all eastside Parishes in such a scale for the first time! With the experience and friendship gained from collaborating on this project, the eastside youth ministries are now further motivated to organise more combined eastside events in the future.

SPERA IN DEO in action!

Fat Fish Friday Explores "Why Be Catholic?" With East District Youths

28 May 2010 - Over 150 youths and young adults from the East District turned up for Fat Fish Friday this evening. Fat Fish Friday, an East District Youth Event, was held for the first time in the Church of The Holy Trinity. It was themed "Why be Catholic? (I mean, God loves everyone right?)" with humorous and inspiring speaker, Br. Gregory Chan, who managed to successfully enlighten the hearts of the many who were present in the Parish Hall.

The casual and fun dialogue session welcomed youths and young adults from all walks of life, for an evening of food, fellowship, praise, fun and most importantly, God. The air conditioned hall was dimly lit with candles, creating a 'cafe-like' atmosphere.

Singing their hearts out, the Christus Dominus Choir started and ended the event with a few songs where the participants joined in and sang along. Also, during the short break, participants helped themselves with a variety of finger food, and drinks.

Following up on last year's East District Youth Rally held at C.H.I.J Katong Primary, Fat Fish Friday focuses on youths and young adults aged 17 – 35. This year, the event is of a smaller scale and covers more specific topics relating to youths of the specific age group.

Planning since January, the dedicated and talented organising team were made up of representatives from CAYC and the various Churches in the East District – Church of the Holy Trinity, Divine Mercy, Holy Family, St Stephen, Our Lady of Perpetual Succour and Church of Our Lady Queen of Peace.

During these 5 months, the organising team were focused on working out an enticing programme which strongly focuses on the theme. Taking each detail into consideration and with such an exciting programme catered to the youths, it is no wonder why there was such an overwhelming response to the event.

The event covered a number of insightful and relevant topics relating to the Catholic Faith and ended off with the importance of having a Catholic Community. Youths participated actively and shared their personal experiences in the discussions led by Br. Gregory Chan.

On a whole, the many friendships made and the engaging responses from participants proved the event successful. Being only the first Fat Fish Friday, the organising committee is looking forward to more Fat Fish Fridays in the coming years.

When interviewed, Priscilla Chong, 19, a Youth Ministry Member of Church of Our Lady Queen of Peace found the event interactive and added – "The whole event was very enlightening as it tells us things that we should know as a Catholic. It helps us to look at our religion from a different point of view."

Stephanie Yap, 19, also added "This session has been very useful to me as it gave me the opportunity to learn more about my faith and cleared some of the doubts I had. The most interesting thing is that they've made it into a dialogue session where it's free and easy to voice your opinions. The speaker's both friendly and inspiring, hence he was able to captivate the audience's attention on the topics he discussed. All in all, I wouldn't mind to go for future sessions like this."

East District Youth Event - PLEASURE (Dialogue) 15 Jan 2011

Pleasure and Catholicism, are these opposed to each other?

15 January 2011 - Pleasure and Catholicism, are these opposed to each other? Is it possible to be Catholic and still seek solace in retail therapy? Or as the old saying goes, "can I have my cake and eat it as well?" These were the questions that we sought to discuss as a follow-up to Fat Fish Friday in May 2010.

Once again, the youth ministries of the East District gathered, this time in the parish of Our Lady Queen of Peace, for an evening of spirited discussion with a Nun and an Apologist.

We were grateful to have had with us Sr. Jennifer Tan from the Canossian Daughters of Charity and Longinus Dismus a teacher and current president of the Singapore Apologists. Both of them brought to the discussion a wealth of experiences, religious and secular.

The discussion was moderated by David Cheong, a self-titled 'hapless undergraduate' from NIE/NTU. While this edition saw a smaller crowd, compared with Fat Fish Friday, it nevertheless provided for an evening of spirited exchange and intellectual pleasure...
